This afternoon was certainly more changeable than this morning and tonight could move up another gear if official warnings of wind, rain, thunderstorms and snow hold true.

This time we’ll start with the deep south and a comment from Sarah “Been raining non stop here since 7am, not torrential just steady & really cold southerlies. Theres low cloud and its cold enough for snow on the mountains above us. Kingston Otago”.

Cara noticed a change further north in Christchurch.. “Was a stunning morning in Chch, warm and sunny, got 3 loads of washing dried but now the temp is dropping, the clouds thickening and the wind picking up..was good whilst it lasted!”

Mel from Nelson noted..”temp dropped and then it rained for about 10 mins and now its sunshining- this has been Nelson’s weather for the past couple of hours”.

Chana didn’t let us know exactly where she was but noticed today’s conditions.. “Clouds are moving fast and on the ground winds have picked up abit with the odd occasional gust coming through”.

Barometers have been working overtime today and with some low pressures taking place…”looks like its starting to come in now, thunder about in South Head (Kaipara), baro lowest it has been all year at 987hPa” said Graeme.
Andrew added “Barometer at 986.6 hPa and still dropping in Levin, very calm with high cloud building.Currently sitting on 19.7 °C” and Rachel chimed in with “Mr Barometer has decided to move his black arrow a little off rain. I think he’s sensing something is up”.
Indeed he could be right Rachel as unstable conditions and low pressure is covering much of the country.

The next twelve hours could be the most impactful on parts of the country however predicting severe weather sometimes doesn’t always go according to plan.

Nice morning here in West Melton but the cloud rolled in from about noon and the temperature gradually dropped with SW winds. No rain but some drizzle this evening. Barometer very low so I would expect some strong southerly winds to follow.

The weather in Palmerston North was awesome all morning and it looked like it was going to stay that way so went for a walk at about 2:30pm. At about 4pm the weather had changed completely and it was hosing down! Four seasons in one day can’t even begin to describe the weather here.

About half an hour ago we had a thunderstorm here in Katikati with heavy rain.
Not much wind though. I have just noticed the Barometer is at 982.8 and falling with my weather station flashing “Storm Alert”. Like I said it’s quite calm at present now the storm has moved away but I feel we are in for some very unsettled weather.
The skies are dark and angry looking. Like you said Phillip, severe weather is hard to predict acurately, but I do believe that the next 12 hours will be interesting to say the least.

Northwesterlies havent been more than fresh at times, nowhere even 1/2 speed of 130kmph.The SW change tomorrow will be higher as always than the NW ever does.

Thinking of you and the pine needles 🙂 We have been enjoying small gusts today out west, nowhere near 130kmph.
