Monday’s News: Strong winds and heavy rain, North Island – Unstable in the north – Settled for the South Island

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…..

STRONG WINDS AND HEAVY RAIN – TROPICAL LOW

A low pressure centre sits just to the north of the North Island today pumping in areas of heavy rain and strong winds into the North Island, especially in areas exposed to the east. The rainfall accumulation map below along with the Metservice warning map shows where heavy rain is most likely.

East to southeasterly winds are strong to gale force for the upper North Island this morning then pushing south this afternoon however as strong winds push south they will lose some intensity.

Please watch our video out later this morning presented by Philip Duncan for more details.

UNSTABLE IN THE NORTH

Increasing surface moisture means conditions could turn unstable for northern parts of the North Island today, more here.

SETTLED FOR THE SOUTH ISLAND

It’s action stations for the North Island today meanwhile the South Island is settled thanks to high pressure, we do have some cloud increase for Nelson and Marlborough though with a few showers then some rain moving in for Marlborough from evening but elsewhere is good 🙂

A touch of high cloud spreads south down over the South Island also.
