A west to southwesterly airflow lies over the country today with a cold front moving over the North Island from the southwest.
North Island
A few showers in the southwest (Taranaki through to Palmy) clear early this morning then sun increases, a cold front passes over the upper North Island this morning bringing a few showers then clearing from the south this afternoon with developing sun. Westerlies tend to the southwest in behind the front. Sunny in the east with morning cloud north of Napier clearing, winds from the west.
South Island
Showers for the West Coast, showers for Southland. Showers about Southland may be heavy with thunder and hail then easing and clearing this evening. Later this evening or overnight a front moves into the West Coast bringing rain. Otago is mostly sunny but a few showers or spits may spread into southern parts of the region at times. Canterbury up through to Nelson is sunny. Westerlies, gusty or strong at times especially in the east then easing this evening.
