Monday’s national forecast – Unstable

A low in the Tasman Sea rotates a series of fronts over New Zealand moving in from the west, the airflow is generally from the northerly quarter. Some unstable / thundery falls likely for some in the west. Temperatures are quite warm in the east and north reaching into the mid twenties for some.

North Island

Showers in the west (eastern Bay Of Plenty down through to Kapiti / Wellington and west of there), some may be heavy at times with thunderstorms especially Taranaki through to Kapiti. Conditions should ease up this evening. Eastern Northland through to Coromandel may dry up with some sun before showers move back in mid to late afternoon. The east coast has morning spits or showers then clearing to mostly sunny and warm weather, some rain moves back into Wairarapa late afternoon spreading from the west. Winds from the north or northwest.

South Island

Cloudy for Marlborough, Nelson, Tasman and down along the West Coast with rain or showers, rain may be heavy first thing Greymouth southwards then easing. Greymouth northwards through to Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds sees a period of heavy rain from late morning or midday with thunderstorms, easing by evening. Canterbury has the chance of a light morning shower or two then drying out with sun / high cloud, late afternoon or evening some rain spreads from the west. Southland and Otago has a cloudier day, there may be one or two light showers, late afternoon or evening showers start to become more widespread then there is rain overnight. The airflow is generally from the north or northeast.
