North Island

Rain for the upper North Island with heavy falls in the northeast first thing this morning (East Cape through to eastern Northland) then easing a touch, rain may continue to be heavy at times during today. Expect strong east to southeasterly winds, gales for eastern coastal areas then backing off from afternoon a little. There may be some thunder in areas exposed to the east during today. Rain north of Napier pushes south this morning, heavy falls for Gisborne / East Cape then gradually switching to Hawkes Bay this afternoon, easterly winds strengthen with coastal gales likely, easing overnight. Expect some high cloud to spread down from the low to the north, mainly over the upper half of the Island. Cloud and a few showers move into Nelson and Marlborough this afternoon, rain this evening for Marlborough. A little cloud starts to stream down into Canterbury later this evening or overnight from the north. Winds are light for most but expect east to northeasterly winds to freshen along the east coast from afternoon.
