A big high pressure system centered south of New Zealand directs a southerly airflow into the South Island today meanwhile an area of low pressure west of the North Island draws in a southeasterly airflow.

North Island
Showers in the east, snow flurries are high up. Morning showers in the southwest (Taranaki to Kapiti) clear then afternoon sun breaks through. Showers develop this afternoon for the upper North Island, there may be a few isolated heavy falls / thunderstorms Northland and Auckland, easing this evening for most but a few isolated heavy falls may remain for some.
South Island
Morning cloud for Nelson, West Coast and Southland then sun increases. Sun develops this afternoon for Otago after cloud gradually breaks. Canterbury has a cloudy day with showers (snow flurries to 600m), easing and thinning out this afternoon, any remaining showers clear by evening. Overnight frosts for inland areas Canterbury southwards, some fog may form overnight in some spots inland and in the east.
