Monday’s national forecast – Perhaps some instability in the north

A low rotates onto the North Island later today from the Tasman Sea meanwhile a weakening front pushes northwards over the South Island.

North Island

Cloud and showers (rain in spots) for the western North Island this morning then easing before midday, isolated showers may beef up in spots this afternoon anywhere south of the Waikato with a rumble of thunder possible then easing this evening. Later this evening however a burst of heavy showers moves through for Auckland and possibly Northland with a chance of thunder and hail. The east coast has some sun and high cloud, this afternoon isolated showers move in south of Napier through to Wellington with the chance of a heavy fall and some thunder then easing overnight. Winds are mostly from the north today, tending northwest north of the Waikato.

South Island

Mostly sunny this morning but expect areas of fog then breaking away, showers or some rain moves into Nelson and Marlborough around midday then clears overnight. Rain for Fiordland, Southland and parts of Otago thins out this morning then clears away. Canterbury sees cloud thicken this afternoon with southerlies, perhaps some drizzle from late afternoon or evening.
