A strengthening northwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today with a front moving onto the lower South Island this afternoon, reaching the upper South Island overnight.

North Island

A mix of sun and cloud in the west with northwesterly winds, afternoon northerlies for Bay Of Plenty through to eastern Northland. Sunny and hot in the east with northwesterlies although winds may tend east to northeast this afternoon for Hawkes Bay. Northwesterlies through Cook Strait are gale force.

South Island

A bit cloudy for the West Coast today, expect a few showers with rain moving in to Fiordland by midday and becoming heavy, heavy rain pushes into North Westland this evening. Sunny and hot in the east with some high cloud, north to northwesterly winds may be a bit blustery this afternoon in areas perhaps strong, some rain pushes into the Canterbury high country this evening spreading from the west. A few showers move through Southland and Otago this afternoon as winds change a little more to the west, clearing up in the evening. Nelson and Marlborough are mostly sunny today with some high cloud, northwesterlies strengthen this afternoon with gales likely about the Sounds.
