A light westerly airflow covers the country today, a disturbance forms about eastern Australia and moves towards central New Zealand during the day and forms into a low pressure system overnight just west of the North Island.

Expect mostly dry weather in the east of both islands today although a few showers will crop up about eastern Otago and some rain will affect Wairarapa. Showers will affect the West Coast of the South Island mainly later in the day for a time, some rain about Taranaki through to Kapiti becomes a bit more widespread about the lower North Island in the afternoon.

Upper North Island

Humid north to northwesterly breezes today bring mostly cloudy skies and some sun at times, there may be the odd light shower about and south of the Waikato during the day. Cloud thickens in the evening.
HIGHS: 26-28, low 30’s in Gisborne

Lower North Island

Mostly cloudy skies in all areas, humid northwesterly breezes. Rain about Taranaki through to Kapiti becomes more widespread during the afternoon, Hawkes Bay remaining dry however with high cloud. Cloudy about the Central North Island with the odd shower especially in the south.
HIGHS: 21-23 in the West, 28-31 in the east

Upper South Island

Mostly cloudy skies, southerly breezes at first in the east tending more northeast during the afternoon. Showers move into the West Coast and about Nelson later in the afternoon, westerly breezes tend more southwest later in the day. Overnight rain spreads into Golden Bay, Nelson and Marlborough.
HIGHS: 18-19 on the West Coast. 20 for Nelson, 22-24 in Canterbury and Marlborough

Lower South Island

Sunny areas and some cloud with westerly breezes, winds tend more northeast right on the Otago coastline. Showers about Fiordland and South Westland. In the afternoon a few isolated showers develop about eastern Otago then clear at night.
HIGHS: 19-21
