A northerly airflow lies over New Zealand today, increasing in strength during the day. A warm front in this flow pushes onto the West Coast of the South Island from afternoon.

North Island

Cloudy areas for the upper North Island with the odd shower, especially from afternoon. Fairly cloudy about the lower southwest of the North Island also, there could be a spit or light shower about Kapiti and upper Hutt at times otherwise mainly dry. Dry along the east coast (Gisbone to Wairarapa), expect some high cloud.

South Island

Cloudy with a few showers for the West Coast of the South Island and Nelson / Marlborough. Rain moves in during the afternoon becoming heavy along the West Coast and parts of Nelson, mainly in the west. Sunny areas and thickening high cloud for most other parts of the South Island, rain becomes heavy about the main divide from afternoon. Some scattered rain spreads into Southland and Otago late afternoon or evening.

Temperatures

Highs in the low to mid twenties for most of the North Island today, getting into the high twenties for parts of the east coast. Temperatures in the high teens for most of the South Island however getting into the early twenties for parts of Canterbury and Southland / Central Otago.
