A ridge of high pressure brings a period of calm to the weather today for most regions.

North Island

A mainly sunny day for the upper North Island with southwesterly winds, there could be an early clearing shower for Auckland and Northland. Mostly sunny for the lower western North Island (Taranaki through to Kapiti), some cloud and a few light showers possible from afternoon however as westerlies tend more northwest. A few morning showers for the east coast then clearing with sunny spells increasing, fresh southwesterlies gradually ease.

South Island

Sunny for Nelson down through to Canterbury in the east today, light winds. A frosty start likely especially for inland areas. Dry with some developing high cloud about Southland and Otago, showers move into Southland around midday as southwesterlies freshen, showers move into Otago late afternoon or evening. Some morning sun possible for the West Coast then cloud and a shower or two moves in during the afternoon, rain moves into Fiordland during the afternoon also.

Temperatures

Highs in the low to mid teens for much of the North Island today, barely getting into double figures for the Central North Island. Low double figure highs for most of the South Island, the warmest temperatures being in coastal areas.
