A low pressure system east of New Zealand today brings a cold southerly airflow for the South Island, milder westerlies further north.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Mostly cloudy skies, the odd shower about also. The shower risk increases after midday and there may be the odd heavy fall in the evening. West to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Occasional showers with west to northwesterly winds, there may be some rain for a time late afternoon / evening.
Highs: 12-16

Eastern North Island
Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, there may be a spot of rain in the evening. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 17-19

Wellington
Cloudy areas with the chance of a shower, northwesterly winds. Overnight rain moves in with southerlies.
Highs: 14-15

Marlborough & Nelson
A sunny start then showers move in during the afternoon, some could be heavy with thunderstorms and hail. Showers ease in the evening then more persistent widespread rain moves into Marlborough overnight with snow lowering to 400m.
Highs: 15-16

Canterbury
Rain about South and Mid Canterbury spreads into North Canterbury during this morning with cold southerly winds, snow lowers to 500m during the afternoon then 300m overnight.
Highs: 8-11

West Coast
Some morning rain or showers then clearing with sunny areas developing this afternoon, showers may hang about Buller through till evening however.
Highs: 11-13

Southland & Otago
Rain or showers for Otago, Southland may have a dry start then showers push in this afternoon as cold southerlies freshen. Snow to around 400m, lowering to 200m in the evening then clearing overnight.
Highs: 8-10
