A front pushes northwards and weakens over the South Island today meanwhile the North Island is under a ridge of high pressure. However tropical cyclone Gita will be moving southwards in the Tasman Sea today, a tentacle of moisture extending out from Gita starts to bring rain to the western North Island from evening, this rain moves onto the upper South Island overnight and becomes heavy.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Areas of cloud and some sun for Northland and Auckland, the odd shower possible also. The Waikato and Bay Of Plenty is a bit cloudier today with showers developing around midday, one or two may be heavy for a time then easing this evening. Light northerlies.
Highs: 26-27

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Increasing cloud, chance of a shower from afternoon then expect evening rain with a heavy falls possible for a time before easing overnight. West to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 24-26

Eastern North Island
Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, some scattered evening rain then clearing overnight. Gisborne may stay fairly dry. Light north to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 29-31

Wellington
Mostly cloudy with evening showers then overnight rain, gusty northwesterly winds.
High: 23-24

Marlborough & Nelson
Increasing high cloud. North to northwest winds change southeast overnight bringing rain, heavy by dawn on Tuesday.
Highs: 25-30

Canterbury
Sunny areas and some high cloud, cloud starts to increase from afternoon as northwest winds change southeast. Some drizzle may make its way into South and inland Mid Canterbury. Patchy rain or drizzle moves in for most overnight.
Highs: 21-28

West Coast
Morning rain about Fiordland then easing to the odd shower, showers further north clear in the evening. Winds from the northwest, changing southerly or southwest by evening for most.
Highs: 20-24

Southland & Otago
Showers now and then for Southland, sunny spells breaking through at times from afternoon. Gusty westerly winds. Otago sees a period of morning rain then the odd shower and sunny areas developing, southwesterlies.
Highs: 15-20
