> From the WeatherWatch archives

In short, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Otago and Southland see the best weather for New Years Day. Either way, have a great one!

Upper North Island

Cloudy areas with the odd shower, many dry areas and some sun possible at times too. Winds light from the north or northwest. High’s in the low to mid twenties.

Lower North Island

Mostly cloudy in the west with a few patchy showers, dry spells becoming more frequent from afternoon at which point some sun may break through, generally mostly cloudy though. Northerly winds. High’s in the low twenties. Along the east coast expect mostly sunny weather with east to northeasterly winds, cloud builds about the ranges in the afternoon. There may be a shower or two about Wellington and the Wairarapa, more so in the afternoon / evening. Temperatures in the low to mid twenties.

Upper South Island

Areas of rain for Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds, easing from afternoon and becoming patchy, winds from the north or northeast. The rest of Marlborough sees mostly cloudy skies, a shower or two, perhaps some rain for a time in the morning, easterly winds. Cloudy areas and some sun for North Westland, the odd shower possible also especially about Buller in the afternoon and perhaps inland about some other hills and ranges. Winds light, tending onshore in the afternoon. Morning cloud breaks to sunny spells in Canterbury, afternoon east to northeast winds. Inland about the foothills cloud may hang around for much of the day. High’s in the low to mid twenties. If it’s cloudy all day high’s may struggle to get out of the teens.

Lower South Island

Any morning mid level cloud breaks to mostly sunny weather, some high cloud may gradually increase however. Light winds then afternoon sea breezes. Afternoon temperatures in the low to mid twenties, high twenties about inland areas.
