A strong northwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today, within this flow a front moves northwards over the South Island during the day reaching the lower North Island overnight.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
A mix of sun and cloud. Cloud a bit thicker about the Waikato bringing the chance of a shower at times. Freshening northwesterly winds.
Highs: 19-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy with the chance of a shower then late evening rain, becoming heavy overnight for Taranaki. There may be some sun this morning about some inland areas before clouding over. Northwesterlies freshen.
Highs: 16-20

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny with increasing high cloud, spots of rain may spread into Wairarapa late afternoon / evening. Northwesterlies pick up from afternoon.
Highs: 23-27

Wellington
Patchy showers or drizzle then evening rain. Strong northwesterly winds may gust to gale, especially later on.
High: 15

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly cloudy, rain develops in Nelson around midday then spreading into Marlborough during the afternoon. Rain will be heavy at times, more so about Nelson. Winds becoming gusty from the north or northwest.
Highs: 17-20

Canterbury
Chance spot of morning rain, some sun possible in the afternoon. Strong to gale northwesterlies about inland areas ease mid to late afternoon. Winds near the coast are breezy from the northeast then tend northwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 19-22

West Coast
Rain with heavy falls and thunderstorms, easing from afternoon. Gusty north to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 15-16

Southland & Otago
Early rain clears then mostly sunny, a shower may brush by Southland in the afternoon. Gusty northwesterly winds.
Highs: 15-21
