Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
COLD FRONT MOVES AWAY
A cold front may deliver a few heavy showers to the eastern North Island first thing this morning but this moves away fairly promptly with the weather becoming sunny before midday with easing southwesterlies.
Western regions have a few showers with showers more frequent for the West Coast of the South Island, expect areas of rain about South Westland or Fiordland.
WARM IN THE EAST
Eastern regions have a nice couple of days on the way, bar showers clearing the eastern North Island this morning. Temperatures will likely be in the mid to late teens today and tomorrow thanks to a westerly quarter airflow. Winds will likely be from the northwest.
Even Wednesday has warm temperatures for eastern regions however a cold front does move into the far south bringing a temperature drop, this sweeps northwards during the afternoon and evening, reaching the lower North Island around dawn on Thursday.
COLD FRONT WED / THU
A cold front moves onto the lower South Island late Wednesday morning, reaching Nelson / Marlborough around midnight then the lower North Island towards dawn on Thursday.
Northerly quarter winds ahead of this cold SW change will likely be strong to gale force for the eastern South Island, more so inland and through Cook Strait and about the lower North Island.
Southwesterlies will be strong for the eastern South Island when they move through, mainly later on Wednesday. Strong southerlies move up the east coast of the North Island on Thursday, very strong south to southeasterly winds develop through Cook Strait early on Thursday with gales likely, also clipping southern Taranaki.
Rain moves northwards with this front with heavy falls possible for a time, the time span of this front is not overly long lasting so while rain may be heavy it looks to move through fairly promptly. Some heavy rain affects the lower North Island early on Thursday then perhaps the far north later in the day.
Snow for the eastern South Island may fall to 400m, there is a possibility there may be heavy snow to this level for a moment but the front as mentioned above moves through fairly promptly so there is a chance it will not last overly long.
