New Zealanders have a mixed feeling about their summer this year, according to a recent WeatherWatch.co.nz poll.
The poll asked the simple following question: “Are you enjoying the summer weather?”
The results were as follows:
Best in years – 55%
Worst in years – 13%
Same as it always is – 32%
WeatherWatch.co.nz says the poll doesn’t decipher between those who think the summer weather is good for holidaying or bad for farming, however it does indicate that a large number of people find the weather very similar to previous summers.
For those in Auckland anecdotal evidence is that this is a good summer, providing plenty of hot days, not too much rain and not a lot of wind. Auckland’s biggest negative would be that humidity appears to be uncomfortable for some…and next month is looking even more humid.
The most negative feedback WeatherWatch.co.nz has received about the weather this summer has come from Dunedin, where daytime highs have been low (such as 14 degrees on Tuesday) and conditions have been windy.
Some in Wellington mentioned conditions in December were especially cloudy, however January appears to be an improvement.

It is a normal summer. But then, most are, which is why the season gets to be called summer. We have dry, hot days and the odd unexpected downpour. So when our official forecasters confidently say we will have an average summer, what they really mean is that we’ll have a summer. It’s like saying we’re driving to Hamilton, and our wheels will probably go around along the way.
People typically have short memories and most of us would have difficulty remembering what weather it was a week ago, so each summer can seem like a whole bizarre new pattern, one we haven’t seen for a while.

It is not “normal” in the sense of average so far. December was much hotter and more humid than average, and also very cloudy for most. Not clear yet for January, but the north remains very warm.

February is always humid in Auckland.
The humidity just started a little earlier this summer, that’s all.
