Over the past week there has been plenty of discussion amongst some groups that the Lyttelton Volcano – an incredibly old and extinct volcano – was perhaps coming back to life following last week’s horrific earthquake.
WeatherWatch.co.nz presented the question to GeoNet experts – asking if the volcano was coming back to life and if it was connected in any way to the recent severe earthquake activity.
GeoNet’s Sara Page replied with this: “There has been a lot of talk on the Lyttelton Volcano! Rest assured none of the current activity in Christchurch is of volcanic origin, and is not going to re-awaken the long extinct volcano.
Luckily for all of those in the South Island, all of the volcanic activity is in the North Island”.
Recently there has been a flurry of discussion from those who are not scientists on future earthquakes and volcanic activity in the Christchurch area.
Due to the extreme and understandable sensitivity for those in Christchurch, WeatherWatch.co.nz will not publish or endorse anything that does not come from the scientific community regarding the current seismic activity.
