Lightning Tracker detects big jump in strikes

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Thunderstorms are continuing to creep slowly towards New Zealand as a very active front approaches from the Tasman Sea.

The northern rain radar now shows the front moving in to the Taranaki coast – rain is likely to make landfall after midnight in Auckland.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the Lighting Tracker has been steadily tracking thunderstorms out in the Tasman all Thurday and at night the number of strikes per hour increased from 145 at 7pm to 496 at near 11pm.

The main period of thunder activity will be from midnight Thursday through to midnight Saturday (48 hour period) says WeatherWatch.co.nz.

The storms are likely to be quite fast moving and isolated – with perhaps more thunder activity occuring on Saturday from Taranaki to Northland.

Well, I will not be disappointed if there are no thunderstorms in South Auckland!
Thanks Team, for keeping us up to date with the lastest outlooks. Much appreciated.

looks like the activity is increasing here i can see more flashes in the distance with the few minutes passing here in kaukapakapa. the clouds have also increased. would this mean that the “thunderstorm” is coming closer?

The front cloud is sliding down the west coast… a few flickers are likely, but nothing for Auckland until after midnight.

Yeah I’m starting to agree… I think the follow up fronts on Saturday will be more aggressive.
