A series of low pressure systems move over New Zealand today, there are no particularly strong features with these lows however cold upper air and a surface southwest change could deliver heavy showers with thunderstorms and hail this afternoon about coastal Otago. Light winds may lead to some instability on Saturday then a low pressure system moves in from the west on Sunday.
Friday
Blue – An afternoon southwest change pushes into Southland / Otago bringing heavy showers, thunderstorms and hail possible too especially about coastal Otago.
A nice day for the North Island’s east coast, sunny areas and some high cloud. Temperatures reaching into the high teens.
Saturday
Blue – Morning heavy showers ease about Auckland. In the afternoon isolated showers develop for a few inland areas due to some instability, showers may turn heavy with thunderstorms about the Central / Eastern North Island then clearing in the evening.
Sunday
Rain about western parts of the country may be heavy afternoon onwards. Northwesterly winds strengthen especially about the North Island’s West Coast, gales likely by evening about coastal areas.
