A cold southwest front moves northwards over the South Island on Tuesday reaching the lower North Island late afternoon.

Mostly sunny about the upper North Island with southwesterly winds, cloud builds later in the evening bringing the low risk of a shower out west.

Sunny areas and increasing cloud for the lower North Island in the west, chance of a shower from late afternoon / evening. West to northwest winds freshen. Any early showers clear along the east coast (mainly about Gisborne) otherwise mainly sunny with light winds tending northwesterly.

Cloudy areas and occasional sun for Wellington, breezy northwesterly winds change southerly late afternoon.
Mainly sunny about Nelson and Marlborough, perhaps some high cloud. West to northwesterly breezes tend southwest late afternoon then dying away in the evening.

Southwesterly winds freshen in the morning for Canterbury bringing the risk of a shower, sunny areas break through from afternoon.

Showers turn to rain in the morning along the West Coast then clearing in the afternoon with sunny spells breaking through, cool southwesterly winds.

Showers about Southland clear later in the evening. Otago sees early rain ease to the odd shower which clears in the evening, some sun may even break through at times. Snow flurries to 400m. Breezy cold southwesterly winds.

Blue – Heavy form of precipitation or cold temperatures, typically below 1 to 2 degrees celsius.
Purple – Strong winds.
Yellow – Temperatures around the mid 20 degree mark or over.
