WeatherWatch.co.nz reader “Ross” sent us a link to these great photos, captured by NASA/GSFC, MODIS Rapid Response.
The images clearly show the flood waters – which for Golden Bay in Nelson was a one in 150 year event – draining out into the sea around the country.

The clean up in Golden Bay is in full gear, after the worst flooding the region has seen in 150 years.
Raging waters in the Aorere River have destroyed the Salisbury Swing Bridge and the James Road Bridge. Livestock has been swept away and houses flooded.
Tasman District Council Engineering Manager, Peter Thomson, says the first priority is contacting the 27 households in the Collingwood area which have been flooded.
The local council, Civil Defence, Ministry of Social Development, volunteer fire brigades and Federated Farmers are helping with the recovery effort.
