Motorists are being urged to take care on the Napier-Taupo Road due to icy conditions.
Police said that two minor crashes had occurred in the past two hours near the summit of the road.
Contractors had been called to the area to treat the ice with grit.
Meanwhile gusty winds are affecting exposed roads in northern New Zealand – winds are near severe gale force across exposed parts of the Far North.

A second very bleaky overcast type of day here in Whangarei, the easterly/N easterly is quite cold and strong making the day very unpleasant.
Certainly a lot cooler than over the past week or so with that wind and in our neck of the woods it is a flaming pain, easterlies are not my favourite wind direction and totally annoying.
Looking at the forecast it seems I am going to have to put up with them for awhile yet.
