Kaimata Inglewood Taranaki -4 at 0830 heaviest frost so far after 5 days.Ground still frozen at 1430.Heading into permafrost ????

how can it be -5 just south of Auckland which is on 0 I just can’t believe it could be so cold so close to the sub-tropics? -.5c in levin this morning.

It’s quite common to see wild differences between coastal observations and inland ones. Hamilton and Tokoroa are quite a distance from the sea, Auckland on the other hand is surrounded by two seperate bodies of water.
Wellington has a similar set up…Upper Hutt can be considerably colder than Wellington airport (which is surrounded by the sea).

At our place in Whangarei it was 2 deg at 7am with a nice but not heavy frost, much warmer than those others I read but still felt the cold.
Beaut sunshine and blue sky so far but hope that cold South or SW does not blow as hard as yesterday.
