Highways close as flood waters rise in North Island

The same storm that has caused major flooding across Victoria in Australia is now causing problems here in New Zealand with a number of roads and highways closed or affected by flood waters.

The New Zealand Transport Agency says several roads in the lower North Island are currently affected by slips and extensive flooding – and more rain is expected this afternoon says WeatherWatch.co.nz.

Roads closed…

  • SH 1 Calico Line: Marton, closed due to flooding.  Detours in place.
  • SH 2 Eketahuna To Pahiatua: Eketahuna, closed to extensive flooding.  No available alternative routes due to flood waters on surrounding roads.

Roads also affected

  • SH 57 Levin To Linton – Flooding: Surface Flooding With Slips – Take Extra Care While Driving
  • SH 35 Omaio: Caution : Washout 3.6kms East Of Motu Bridge. Single Lane Closure Now In Place With Priority Signage.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says heavy rain will continue for a few more hours yet before easing around mid afternoon.

MetService has a rain warning in place for the area until 2pm.
