Get ready for a showery and stormy Valentine’s Day.
We’ve been talking about it for the last few days. A slow moving low crossing the Tasman and heading right for New Zealand.
As of this morning, the first bands of showers have already started to make landfall in the far south of the North Island, the far north of the South Island and the West Coast…and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Expect showers to continue to extend their coverage of both Islands as we go throughout the day. On the North Island, Northland through Taranaki will see showers first. On the South Island, it will be Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast getting wet first.
As we work our way through the afternoon, the rest of the country will begin to get wet. By evening, almost all of New Zealand will either be getting wet or be running a very good risk for getting wet.
Most of the preciptiation should come down as general shower activity. However, some heavy falls are possible. Thunderstorms producing heavy rain are also possible. At this time, it looks like the most of the North Island has a chance for seeing periods of heavy rain, as well as thunderstorms.
Parts of the South Island area also running a risk for seeing heavy rain, mainly about Canterbury and Marlborough, including Christchurch and Blenheim.
Stay with us throughout the day for the latest updates and information.

this morning, hard to believe we’re in for some (much needed) rain! Blue skies, not a breath of wind! But I do believe you!

Thanks for the forecast but Chch expecting heavy rain today? That does seem a surprise as it doesn’t often happen in summer. Will wait and see.

Hi there Amber – the heavier showes will be mostly confined to those northern, central and western regions – and not so much the east. Drizzle and lighter showers are expect there – as you aren;’t expected to get the heat so much as northern NZ today.
Our Christchurch forecast shows sunnier weather arriving later in the week and for Saturday. (Hmmm… perhaps don’t look at Sunday!)
