Gone fishing – Rotorua lakes now ‘open season’ for enthusiasts

> From the WeatherWatch archives

After a peaceful winter, the Rotorua lakes will be heaving with fishermen today.

Trout fishing season is officially underway and strong angler turnouts are expected on lakes Tarawera, Rotoiti and Okataina.

Fish and Game says the lakes have been rested for three months, to boost trout numbers.

Steady weather patterns over winter have also helped trout survival, meaning more trophies for anglers to catch this season.
