Friday’s national forecast – Heavy rain North Island

A front passes over the North Island today bringing heavy rain as it moves through, perhaps an unstable shower in the west this afternoon. The South Island catches some rain in the north from the aforementioned front, unstable showers this afternoon about inland hills and ranges.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Heavy rain in the morning for Waikato up through to Northland, easing around midday and sun breaks through, the odd isolated shower may continue. Heavy rain moves into Bay Of Plenty in the afternoon, easing in the evening. Northerlies tend northwest when rain eases.
Highs: 18 – 19

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning rain with a chance of heavy falls, easing afternoon with sunny spells breaking through. A few isolated heavy falls possible from mid afternoon (mainly about Taranaki), perhaps even thunder, easing in the evening. Northerlies tend northwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 14 – 18

Eastern North Island

Mostly cloudy with spits of rain starting to spread from the west around midday, rain may become a bit more persistent south of Napier in the afternoon. All rain clears in the evening and there may be some late sun before dusk. North to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 18 – 22

Wellington

Rain develops in the morning spreading down from the north, easing mid afternoon to the odd spit or shower. Northerlies pick up later in the day.
Highs: 15 – 17

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly cloudy, a few spits or showers possible, rain too mainly about the Sounds then clearing away in the afternoon with sunny spells breaking through. Isolated showers for inland hills and ranges late afternoon, some could become heavy with thunder then clearing at night. Light winds tend northerly around midday.
Highs: 16 – 18

Canterbury

Low cloud or fog then sunny spells, isolated showers develop in the afternoon especially inland where one or two could become heavy with thunder, clearing at night. Light winds tend onshore in the afternoon.
Highs: 15 – 20

West Coast

Partly cloudy, isolated showers develop in the afternoon, one or two could be heavy, easing at night. Light winds.
Highs: 16 – 19

Southland & Otago
Early rain clears Southland, dry elsewhere with morning fog or low cloud then sunny spells break through, isolated showers develop in the afternoon (mainly inland), some become heavy with thunderstorms then clearing at night. A few heavy showers may spread to coastal areas especially coastal Otago. Light winds tend onshore.
Highs: 15 – 20
