A cold southerly front works its way north over the country today forming into a depression west of the North Island around midday then moving north in the evening. Expect a period of rain or showers for most places at some point during the day.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato, CNI & BOP
Cloudy periods with west to southwest breezes, the odd shower especially afternoon where one or two may be heavy then clearing in the evening. Sunny spells at first for the Bay Of Plenty with light winds.
Highs: 16-20

Eastern North Island
Morning sunny spells with light winds, a mid afternoon southerly change brings a few showers which clear in the evening
Highs: 17-19

Western North Island
Cloudy, northwesterlies change brisk southeast around midday bringing a few brief showers which then clear. Sunny periods develop during the afternoon, southeasterlies ease at night.
High: 14-16

Wellington
Sunny spells and some high cloud, winds change strong southerly late morning bringing showers which ease early afternoon. Still the odd shower for the rest of the afternoon but long dry spells too. Any remaining showers clear at night.
High: 13

Nelson
A few brief morning showers with a southerly change then mostly sunny after midday. Cool south to southeast winds ease at night.
Highs: 14-15

Marlborough
A few morning showers, sunny periods in the afternoon especially away from the coast inland. Strong cold southerlies ease at night.
Highs: 13-14

Canterbury
Showers and snow flurries to 500m clear by midday, clear spells inland from early afternoon and towards the coast in the evening. Cold southwesterlies ease at night. Frosts inland at night.
Highs: 9-11

West Coast
A period of early morning rain possibly thundery clears then expect mostly sunny weather, winds a little brisk from the southeast at first then easing after midday.
High: 16

Southland & Otago
Early showers and snow flurries to 400m clearing, the odd sunny spell then developing for the rest of the day. Still a fair amount of cloud about especially for Southland and the Catlins. Cold south to southwest winds ease, dying out in inland areas at night. Frosty inland at night.
Highs: 8-10

This morning beautiful red clouds were observed over Auckland at dawn. Sunshine and rainbows as clouds build.
