A depression swirls and brews west of the North Island today while a weak ridge of high pressure moves onto the South Island. Expect rain or showers for central parts of the country, mainly dry elsewhere although rain moves into Northland at night.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato, CNI & BOP
North to northeasterly breezes. Expect cloudy periods with the odd sunny spell at times, mainly in the west. A few light showers also possible now and then mostly about the Bay Of Plenty. At night rain moves into Northland.
Highs: 18-22

Eastern North Island
High cloud thickening, light winds tend southerly in the afternoon. There may be a late evening drizzle patch or two.
Highs: 19-20

Western North Island
Dry at first with cloudy skies and northerlies, winds tend southeast around midday bringing the odd shower which clears later in the evening.
Highs: 18-19

Marlborough, Nelson & Wellington
Rain with heavy falls possible in the morning. Rain eases during the afternoon to clear later in the evening. Cool south to southeasterly winds.
Highs: 14-15

Canterbury
Rain clearing in the morning, cloudy periods remaining for most of the day. Rain may remain about the North Canterbury hill country till evening then clearing there. Southerlies tend northeast in the afternoon.
Highs: 13-14

West Coast
Mainly sunny about Fiordland and South Westland with light winds, some high cloud. Morning rain clears from North Westland however remains about Buller till afternoon.
Highs: 16-17

Southland & Otago
Sunny with light winds after a cold start, some high cloud at times.
Highs: 12-14
