A ridge lies over the North Island today while a front approaches in the far south.

Upper North Island

Mostly sunny weather with north to northeasterly breezes, some cloud possible morning and night mainly about inland areas. Low risk of an afternoon shower about inland eastern Bay Of Plenty. During the day a few areas of cloud will brush over Northland with easterlies there.
HIGHS: 20-23, 27 in Gisborne.

Lower North Island

Mostly sunny weather with west to northwest breezes, some cloud at times mainly in the west. Northwesterlies rising to gale force about Cook Strait from afternoon then easing overnight. Some high cloud also for a time after midday however clearing in the evening.
HIGHS: 19-22, 26-27 on the east coast.

Upper South Island

Becoming mostly cloudy on the West Coast this morning north of Hokitika, the odd shower then developing by midday with increasing northwesterlies. Sunny in Nelson with light winds tending northwest by midday, some high cloud from afternoon clears overnight. About Marlborough and Canterbury expect dry weather with some high cloud, light winds near the coast pick up from the northwest in the afternoon. Breezy northwesterly winds in inland areas all day easing at night. Winds change southerly later in the evening about South and Mid Canterbury bringing some cloud for a time, southerlies also reach North Canterbury overnight however winds will only be light and conditions remaining dry.
HIGHS: 18-19 on the West Coast, 22 in Nelson. 25-26 in Canterbury and Marlborough.

Lower South Island

Thick high cloud with strong to gale force northwesterlies about the Southland coast spreading to most places by midday. Winds change southwest about Southland mid afternoon bringing showers which move into Otago late afternoon then clearing overnight. Rain develops on the West Coast in the morning with strengthening northwesterlies, heavy falls from afternoon then easing overnight as winds change southwest.
HIGHS: 17-18. Low 20’s inland and about the coast.
