A large high to the southeast of the country and a low in the Tasman Sea directs a humid northeasterly airflow over New Zealand today.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Cloud increases in the morning, the odd shower from midday. Rain moves into northern Northland in the evening. East to northeasterly winds, becoming a bit gusty later in the day.
Highs: 18-22
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
High cloud, mid level cloud builds in the afternoon with showers developing (especially about southern Taranaki through to Ruapehu but they may occur anywhere). Some of these showers become heavy with thunderstorms then clearing later in the evening. Easterly quarter winds.
Highs: 18-23
Eastern North Island
Patchy showers or drizzle then dry spells increasing from afternoon, east to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 18-20
Wellington
Mostly cloudy, may be a shower or two. Easterly winds.
High: 21
Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly cloudy, may be a spit or the odd shower (more so afternoon about inland areas). East to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 18-20
Canterbury
Mostly cloudy, the odd shower or drizzle patch possible, more nearer the coast in the morning then further inland from afternoon. East to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 16-18
West Coast
Sunny areas and some high cloud. Isolated showers may develop about the ranges in the afternoon, mostly about Fiordland where some could turn heavy with thunderstorms then easing later in the evening. Light winds tend onshore in the afternoon.
Highs: 20-24
Southland & Otago
Some morning sun about Southland and central Otago, showers develop in the afternoon about inland areas bringing heavy falls and possible thunderstorms then easing overnight and clearing. Coastal Otago has mostly cloudy skies with a light shower or two possible. East to Nor’East winds for Otago, light winds tend southerly in the afternoon about Southland.
