A cold southwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today, a front within this flow clears the North Island this morning then another region of activity builds over the South Island from afternoon.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning rain, possibly heavy with thunderstorms then easing to showers by midday as northwesterly winds change westerly. Some sun breaks through at times from afternoon.
Highs: 16-17
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Early rain eases to showers then picking up again in the evening. Breezy west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 10-15
Eastern North Island
High cloud, breaking away in the afternoon as northwesterly winds change westerly.
Highs: 15
Wellington
Morning showers clear then some sun breaks through, showers again from evening. West to northwesterly winds.
High: 14
Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny areas and some high cloud, showers move in late afternoon then turning to rain overnight with small hail possible. Westerly quarter winds tend southerly later on.
Highs: 13-16
Canterbury
Sunny spells, chance of an isolated shower or two otherwise mainly dry. Showers increasing in intensity from late afternoon as light winds tend to the south, there may be some small hail also.
Highs: 10-13
West Coast
Occasional showers, especially from afternoon then clearing overnight as westerlies change southwest.
Highs: 11-12
Southland & Otago
Cloudy areas, the odd shower, more so from afternoon with the odd isolated heavy fall possible then clearing in the evening. A chance of some small hail also. Light winds tend southwest around midday.
Highs: 10-11
