Cold southerlies cover New Zealand today, meanwhile a ridge starts to sneak in over the lower South Island. Also late afternoon / evening an upper trough may deliver a period of heavy showers about the upper North Island.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning showers clear then late afternoon / evening showers may re-develop before clearing again later on. If these showers develop they may be heavy for a time. The Bay Of Plenty is looking to remain fairly dry after any early showers clear. Southwesterly winds tend southerly during the afternoon and evening.
Highs: 13-15
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning showers clear although there may be a spit or two push through at times till evening. Some sun may break through at times from afternoon. Breezy south to southeasterly winds, strong at times about Taranaki.
Highs: 6-11
Eastern North Island
Showers ease becoming few and far between from afternoon, becoming more restricted to the coastal fringes in the evening. A few snow flurries may lower to 400m (perhaps 300m for Wairarapa), only just a dusting about the ranges if anything. Gusty cold southwesterlies develop in the morning.
Highs: 11-12
Wellington
Mostly cloudy, the odd shower possible from afternoon, more so in the east with the chance of a few snow flurries lowering to 300m by evening. Any snow is more then likely to cause no issues, just a dusting if that. Brisk to strong southerly winds.
High: 9
Marlborough & Nelson
Any early showers clear then sunny spells increase, south to southeasterly winds (fresh about the Marlborough coast) ease later in the day.
Highs: 9-12
Canterbury
Showers, mainly about the coast and parts of North Canterbury ease during the day then clearing overnight, snow flurries to 200m. Sunny spells about South Canterbury and perhaps inland Mid Canterbury. Cold southwesterly winds.
Highs: 6-7
West Coast
Mainly sunny with any early cloud clearing, southeasterly winds ease from afternoon.
High: 10
Southland & Otago
Cloudy areas about the coast with the odd shower and low level snow flurry (200 to 100m, snow will basically be a non issue), clearing by evening. Expect long dry periods also with some sun at times. Inland areas are mainly sunny and dry after a very frosty start, further heavy frosts again overnight. Southwesterly winds.
Highs: 5-8

Hi Philip, not sure whether you’re aware of it, but your wind map must be out of date – in Chch we’re getting a southerly, the map shows westerly, and seems to be unchanged the last couple of days.
Great work on your site, very informative videos! It’s certainly my first choice, and I recommend it as such to anyone interested in the weather.
Cheers,
Joe.
