A west to southwesterly airflow lies over the country today, a weak front works its way over the South Island during much of the day then onto the lower North Island later this evening. Meanwhile an even colder front moves onto the lower South Island this afternoon then pushes northwards.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Cloudy areas with breezy southwesterly winds for Northland and Auckland, a few patchy showers move in around midday. The Waikato sees a sunny start then cloud and the odd shower possible from afternoon, the Bay Of Plenty stays mainly dry all day with cloud building in the afternoon.
High: 15-16

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Sunny areas and some cloud with westerly quarter winds, increasing after midday with cloud building. The odd patchy shower moves in late afternoon or evening then clearing overnight with a southwest change.
Highs: 12-15

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny weather with westerly breezes picking up a touch in the afternoon, overnight winds change southwest with some cloud and the chance of a shower.
Highs: 16-17

Wellington

Mostly sunny with northwesterly breezesy, building a little in the afternoon. Overnight winds change southerly with some cloud.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson

Mainly sunny with a little high cloud possible, westerly quarter winds tend southwest overnight.
Highs: 15-16

Canterbury

Mainly sunny with a little high cloud, light winds may tend westerly in the afternoon then later in the evening a southwest change moves through bringing showers possibly heavy with hail which clear overnight.
Highs: 12-13

West Coast

Mostly cloudy with areas of rain developing by midday, easing to showers mid to late afternoon as westerlies change southwest.
Highs: 11-12

Southland & Otago

Thickening high cloud with west to northwesterly winds, the odd shower possible about Southland and inland western Otago. Showers more likely late afternoon / evening for most with snow to 500m and a risk of hail as winds change southwest.
Highs: 9-11
