A complex low pressure system lies over the country today bringing mainly unsettled weather to all regions. Heavy showers and thunderstorms possible for the North Island today especially in the west. The airflow tends southwesterly over the South Island bringing showers in the east and clearing weather out west.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Some morning sun possible then expect showers by midday, some may be heavy with isolated thunderstorms and hail. Northwesterly winds change southerly overnight.
Highs: 15-17

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
A chance of some morning sun, rain moves in around midday possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail then pushing eastwards into the CNI. Rain south of Taranaki may become heavy for a more sustained period of time from this afternoon not easing till overnight as a southerly change pushes through.
Highs: 13-16

Eastern North Island
Early rain clears then expect mostly sunny weather with light winds, rain moves in again late afternoon or evening.
Highs: 17-19

Wellington
Morning sunny areas, cloud builds in the afternoon with a southerly change which becomes strong later with gales possible. The odd shower from late afternoon.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly sunny in the morning with light winds, southerlies pick up around midday with increasing cloud. Rain affects northern Tasman and the Sounds from mid afternoon and there is a chance this rain band may slink a little further south into the greater Nelson / Marlborough area. Any rain then clears later this evening / overnight.
Highs: 13-14

Canterbury
Becoming mostly cloudy in the morning with southwesterly winds picking up, strong this afternoon near the coast. A few showers about by midday then easing overnight.
High: 10

West Coast
A few early showers clear then sunny areas develop this afternoon, gusty southeasterly winds possibly strong at times then easing later in the evening.
High: 14

Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy with southerly winds, the odd brief shower about.
Highs: 8-12
