Friday’s Headlines (x3): Cold start, Cooler day time temperatures, Rain outlook

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…

COLD START

The weather is more settled today compared to yesterday thanks to high pressure in the Tasman Sea starting to move in, the airflow is still from the southwest but it is much weaker.

It’s a cold start this morning with frosts possible for inland areas, the upper South Island and Central North Island seem like the most likely candidates. While the map below suggests frosts are possible down into Central Otago, the Lakes District to be more exact, it may stay just above zero due to some cloud cover.

COOLER DAY TIME TEMPERATURES COMPARED TO EARLIER THIS WEEK

Highs were in the low to mid twenties when we started this week, yesterday single figure highs were had about inland parts of the South and North Island’s.

Today and tomorrow we perk up a little reaching into the mid teens, perhaps even late teens for the eastern and upper North Island on Saturday.

RAIN OUTLOOK – NEXT SEVEN DAYS

Compared to the recent weather we have had, the next seven days aren’t looking all that wet, perhaps a little dry if anything for some.

It’s not to say we won’t have showers or some rain move through. Showers with some instability move into the lower South Island on Sunday, reaching the North Island on Monday. Further isolated showers are likely for the North Island on Tuesday with rain moving into Fiordland at the same time.

A front moves onto the South Island Wednesday next week bringing rain then reaching the North Island on Thursday although in a more weakened state.

So some wet weather in the mix coming up but not overly wet. Most regions around New Zealand are quite sodden anyway, just parts of the eastern South Island are sitting on a normal amount of soil moisture in the ground for the time of year.
