Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
RIDGE MOVES IN, UNSETTLED NORTH ISLAND
A ridge of high pressure moves in over the South Island today bringing in settled weather, showers north of Banks Peninsula in the east clear from the south this morning.
The North Island still has some unsettled weather, perhaps a few heavy showers in the east first thing then easing, clearing this evening. The odd shower could remain north of Mahia Peninsula. The upper North Island is dry with increasing sun, showers for Auckland and Northland clear away to the north.
Naturally it will be cold to start for the South Island especially inland.
FIRST HALF OF NEXT WEEK FULL OF COLD FRONTS
On Monday next week a cold front hits the lower South Island before moving northwards, another series of fronts push through on Tuesday. One last cold front hits the far south early on Wednesday.
Western regions and the far south are going to cop more wet weather than in the east thanks to a predominant west to southwesterly airflow. While fronts reach the North Island they will likely weaken as they arrive meaning conditions will not be as wet in the west as the South Island’s West Coast.
From Thursday high pressure starts to move in with conditions easing. Friday and next weekend looks mainly settled thanks to high pressure.
The below map shows rainfall for the next seven days. The rain about the lower North Island in green is a result of rain falling overnight and this morning but this does ease. For the key showing what colours represent what rainfall accumulations please see this page here.
