Updated 7:35am — Frosty conditions have reached as far north as Auckland this morning with temperatures at 7am between 1 degree and 5 degrees in the city. The coldest weather is in west Auckland, in particular Henderson Valley.
It’s even colder in Waikato with Hamilton on -2 at 7am with temps around Central Plateau at -4C.
It’s -5 in Waiouru.
Rotorua is on -2 and temperatures hovering close to zero are affecting parts of Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa.
In the South Island, Nelson is hovering closer to the freezing mark at around 1 or 2 degrees C at 7am, with parts of Marlborough down to -2.
Canterbury has frosty areas with temperatures as low as -4 on the plains and as mild as +7 around Banks Peninsula and the Port Hills. Christchurch city has -1.
Central Otago sees a number of -3’s and -4’s and even -5 but oddly it’s Dunedin that’s the mildest of the main centres this morning, in double digits with 9 to 11 degrees thanks to a windier westerly. Invercargill and Southland are also a bit milder, mostly between 6 and 11 degrees at the moment.
The 7:15am temperature map shows a lot of blue across NZ (dark blue closer to freezing, light blue single digits below 5)
IN PERSPECTIVE:
Just how cold is NZ right now? Umm, a lot colder than Australia!
