WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters say the biggest threat due to Auckland’s current thunderstorms will be surface and flash flooding.
Head weather analyst Philip Duncan says not all of Auckland will have thunder, but torrential downpours may lead to surface and flash flooding. “These are huge clouds producing torrential downpours. We can focus on the hail or the thunder but in reality it’s the rain that will cause the most issues”
Mr Duncan says flooding could be enough to affect some major highways and says motorists should avoid driving where possible.
“We are seeing some huge localised downpours, especially in the west. Some properties may be flooded”.
The front is slowly tracking south east.
