A rainstorm has sparked surface flooding, slips and sewer overflows in Tauranga.

The council says worst hit was Awaiti Place in Welcome Bay.

A spokesman says there was no apparent damage to homes, but one or two garages have been flooded.

There’s also been a sewer overflow there.

Head weather analyst Philip Duncan says the band of heavy rain was very narrow but has barely moved all day.

Gael, a regular visitor to weatherwatch.co.nz says they’ve recorded 50mm of rain so far today.

Tauranga City Council is on a first level of alert, and will monitor the situation for the next 24 hours.

The Chapel Street Wastewater Treatment Plant is working at full capacity to cope with the extra inflow.
