Fireworks cause few problems for fire service

> From the WeatherWatch archives

The Fire Service took more than 500 emergency calls overnight, but only a fraction were put down to fireworks.

A house in Rotorua was damaged when fireworks landed on the roof, starting a fire and in Auckland a specialised rescue team was needed to deal with a vegetation fire in Bucklands Beach.

Nationally, only 40 of the 111 calls were directly related to fireworks.

Meanwhile, Christchurch is promising things will go off with a bang tonight. The city’s public fireworks display at New Brighton Pier was planned for last night, but it was postponed because of strong winds. Organisers are hoping for better weather tonight, with a crowd of around 100,000 expected.

Wellington’s 12-minute waterfront display went ahead in spite of the weather last night.
