Firefighters battling hard to protect Titahi Bay homes

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Helicopters are heading back out to continue fighting a large scrub fire in Titahi Bay, north west of Wellington.

The blaze has burned overnight forcing 150 people from their homes in the Gloaming Hill area.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says a fairly strong, dry, northerly will continue today.  As of 8:30am it was already 18 degrees with northerly gusts up to 70km/h on exposed hilltops.

Fire spokesman Murray Dunbar says firefighters have spent the night protecting houses from the flames and helicopters will resume their operations at first light. He says there has been extensive damage to vegetation from the fire but none to buildings.

Police suspect arson is behind the blaze and are speaking to two young men.
