Recent rain in the Waikato and more falls forecast for the next fortnight, is welcome news for the region’s farmers.
They are still under significant pressure because of the drought though, says Environment Waikato.
Up to 50 millimetres of rain has fallen on the region’s farming areas in the last week, but it is estimated between 75 and a 100 millimetres is needed over several days, before soil moisture conditions get anywhere near back to normal.
Waikato Rural Support Trust Chairman, Neil Bateup, says some farmers are still feeling the financial effects of the 2008 drought and the impact of that will probably be felt for a couple of years.
