“We were parked in our motorhome opposite Westhaven motel last night. At around 3.30 am it started pouring down with rain. It was extremely heavy. At 4am we turned the motorhome on and saw pilots bay was under water. We tryed to get to higher roads but all roads were up to the sills of the parked cars. We tryed to get down Maunganui road but the round a bout at Burger King was also under water. We got as far as Pizza Hut and had to head higher up grove road to escape the turents if water pouring across the road. We saw the vagabond store had water up the windows inside . Called the fire brigade but they were so busy. Alarm was going , then shorted out. Here’s an image of Westhaven motel” – Cruising New Zealand (Facebook)
