Deep south shivers near zero at 12noon

> From the WeatherWatch archives

The ski fields may not be open yet but this afternoon it is definitely wintry in the deep south with temperatures remaining in the low single digits and many centres nearer to zero than double digits.

Invercargill remains at just 4 degrees this hour with cloudy skies and a light nor’easter reports NewstalkZB.  In Gore and Lumsden it’s just 3 degrees while in Queenstown the overcast skies and light winds have the mercury on just 2 degrees.

Dunedin is also on just 4 degrees with similar sky conditions.

But a brisk nor’easter is pushing temperatures up further north.  Timaru has 8 degrees and Christchurch and Nelson share 11.

After a clear night and a 5 degree ground frost, the high cloud that rolled in has stopped it warming up to past 7 which is my current reading. It would be ‘wintry’ if the day had rain and a howling southerly, lol.
