Climbing wall to mark Mangetepopo Gorge tragedy

> From the WeatherWatch archives

A climbing wall is being unveiled today to mark the Mangetepopo Gorge tragedy.

Six students and a teacher at Auckland’s Elim Christian College died after drowning in the gorge, south of Turangi, in April 2008.

School Principal Murray Burton says the climbing wall has seven colours to represent each person who died.

He says the three-year anniversary will be just as hard as the first.

“I think it just goes to show you never get over these things. You just live through them one step at a time,” he says.

Mr Burton is delighted the wall has finally come to fruition.
