BLOG : THE GLOBAL WARMING DEBATE

Reaction to yesterday’s Youtube video has been quite interesting as people agree or disagree with the video’s theory on how we should prepare for Global warning.   (if you missed the video, you’ll find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDsIFspVzfI&eurl=http://widget-81.slide.com/widgets/sf.swf )

A colleague of mine argued that while he agrees we need to keep our planet clean, he has greater issues with just “blowing money and increasing taxes” when we aren’t 100% sure what causes global warming.  He also argued that even if every New Zealander was clean and green and lead the world in fighting global warming, we wouldn’t make a drop of difference to the planet’s health.  I tend to agree as New Zealand isn’t a real contributor to greenhouse gases.   However…a friend of mine argued another angle.

That although we don’t really contribute on a global scale localised pollution does affect our health.  She argues pollution in the air is so bad that fish now contain dangerous levels of mercury caused by pollution.  Also Auckland’s air pollution has, from times, been worse than London.  This contributes to a deterioration in health which costs tax payers money whether you like it or not.
