WeatherWatch.co.nz is warning motorists to watch out for black ice – especially in the South Island as skies continue to clear.
Frosts, possibly severe, are expected in a number of regions.
Liquefaction in Christchurch has buckled many roads and footpaths, meaning as snow starts to melt there will be more chances of it pooling – then freezing.
This could mean roads and footpaths normally ice free, could be treacherous this morning.
Ice and snow could also pose problems around the central North Island and possibly the lower North Island.
Relatively warmer weather is expected by Wednesday.
