Big funnel cloud seen in North Canterbury

> From the WeatherWatch archives

A big funnel cloud has been spotted in North Canterbury late this afternoon associated with thunderstorm activity in the area.

Paula BorthwickSmith took this photo somewhere in the Amuri Basin area around 4.30pm and shared it to another page I run stormchasers.co.nz, on facebook it is https://www.facebook.com/nzstormchasers

A video was also shot taken by Alex McNabb, you can see it on the NZStormchasers facebook page or here:

Thunderstorm activity will have eased by now for eastern parts of the country today, overnight there is another chance of thunderstorms about Taranaki and perhaps northwestern coastal parts of the South Island.

Thunderstorms around Invecargill lasted for over an hour late this afternoon with lightning striking a sheep and a dog in the area!

Over the years I’ve noticed Southland on occasion can get really nice late afternoon / evening thunderstorms. I’d love to go and chase one one day down there.

Hopefully the animals pulled through but they would be lucky if they did by the sounds of it!
